Reminders: two tips to help you remember

March 16, 2015

Since becoming a full-time entrepreneur, I've noticed how fast a work day can fly by. There is not enough time to do everything. Yet I cannot afford to miss a single deadline, whether for a client project, source deductions (God knows the government won't forgive you...) or school work. I just have to remember everything.

Problem is: I've never been good at memorizing things. And especially not lists of unrelated, but equally important, items. So I've had to figure out how to compensate through the help of a few tools and app functions. Here are two of the solutions that have saved my butt more than a few times!

1. Location-based triggers in your Reminders (the app that comes with your iPhone)

Everyone knows that you can set a reminder for a specific time and date. But did you know that you can also set it up to trigger a reminder based on your GPS location? For example, you can get a reminder when you get to your office so you don't forget to send a crucial email the moment you come in the door?

To do so, open your Reminders App in your iPhone or on your Mac computer. Once you type in the name of a new reminder, you click on the i button to the right (image #1 below). From there, you can choose a location and set a trigger for the next time your arrive or leave from there.

2. Different kinds of reminders in Calendar App: I was putting a reminder in my computer not too long ago to remind me to bring a dictionary to one of my upcoming exams. This is one of the reminders I REALLY do not want to forget. Looking around my computer, I noticed a new (I think) feature: I could ask for a different kind of reminder than simply a pop-up on my phone. I can ask for an email, a message, a message with sound or even to open a specific file. Since I check my emails all the time, I figured getting one would definitely help me remember.

To use this feature, open your Calendar on your iPhone or Mac. Create a new event and click on the Alert button. You will see a few options listed. Click on Custom (image #1 below). From there you will see a new window open and the first menu lists the options available (image #2 below). Pick the one you need to make sure you never miss a reminder ever again!

What about you: how do you remember everything? If you've found an oustanding app or solution to get things done faster, better and without ever forgetting anything, please do share!
